Geotextile, also known as geotextile, is a permeable geosynthetic material made of synthetic fibers through needle punching or weaving.
Geotextile is one of the new geosynthetic materials, and the finished product is in the form of a cloth, generally with a width of 4-6 meters
and a length of 50-100 meters. Geotextiles are specifically divided into short filament geotextiles and long filament geotextiles. What is the
difference between the two?
1. Material characteristics
Long filaments are made from high-quality polyester or polypropylene chips, which are melted and spun at high temperatures. Its fibers
are relatively long, with a smooth surface and a relatively white color, and have high tensile strength and puncture resistance. And the
short fiber geotextile is made of PET polyester short fibers as raw materials, which are directly laid with a mesh and needle punched process.
Its fibers are relatively short and have a slightly darker color, but they still have excellent physical and chemical properties.
2. Production process
The production process of filament is relatively complex, including multiple steps such as high-temperature melting and spinning of polyester
chips. There are significant advantages in fiber arrangement, structural tightness, and other aspects. And short fiber geotextiles simplify the
production process by directly laying and needling polyester short fiber yarns to form a stable structure. Although the process is relatively
simple, it can still meet various engineering requirements.
3. Performance indicators
(1) Breaking strength: Long filament geotextile has a higher breaking strength than short filament geotextile due to its longer fiber length and
compact structure.
(2) Permeability: Both have excellent permeability, allowing water and air to pass through, reducing water accumulation and poor drainage in
the soil. However, the specific permeability performance still needs to be comprehensively considered based on factors such as fiber density
and pore size.
(3) Corrosion resistance and aging resistance: both filament and short filament geotextiles have been specially treated and have strong corrosion
resistance and aging resistance, which can resist the erosion of acid, alkali and chemical substances in the soil, as well as ultraviolet radiation.
4. Application Fields
(1) Long filament geotextile has characteristics such as high strength and high fracture strength, and is commonly used for roadbed reinforcement
in infrastructure projects such as highways, railways, and airports; Slope protection and anti-seepage measures for water conservancy projects
such as embankments, dams, and reservoirs; And in the fields of anti-seepage and pollution prevention for environmental protection projects
such as landfills and sewage treatment plants.
(2) Short fiber geotextile has the characteristics of convenient construction, moderate price, and corrosion resistance. It is widely used in highway
pavement maintenance, railway subgrade reinforcement, soil and water engineering, tunnels, fish ponds, artificial lakes, and other fields. It has
complete specifications and a width of up to 6 meters, making it convenient for large-scale installation and construction.
From the above, it can be seen that there are significant differences between geotextile filament and short filament in material properties,
production processes, performance indicators, and application fields. The selection of which type of geotextile should be comprehensively
considered based on specific engineering requirements, design requirements, and economic costs.
